GUMS 102: Gum Recession

September 27, 2018

Receding gums occur when the gum tissue begins to pull back from the teeth.  This recession exposes the more sensitive roots of the teeth: this causes sensitivity in the tooth and can be painful. The teeth may appear longer and the darker tissue at the root of the tooth may be visible.

What causes gum recession? There are three main causes:

1. Gum disease is the main culprit. When bacteria are not properly removed, especially from near the gumline, they will irritate the gum tissue and cause symptoms of redness, swelling, and bleeding. Gum disease left untreated will then cause recession and maybe even tooth loss. Do note that every case is individual and sometimes genetics can play a part in this.

2. Bruxism or teeth grinding: The movement of the teeth while grinding occurs can inflame healthy gum tissue and then cause it to regress. A  custom nightguard while you sleep is a great preventative measure.

3. Aggressive oral habits: Brushing and flossing too aggressively can be a factor in gum recession. We may recommend a toothbrush with softer bristles and even if you are an adult, you know how we love to demonstrate proper form when it comes to brushing and flossing!
